Our curriculum is designed to help students achieve key objectives, including preparing for college, acquiring practical business skills for personal use, developing essential computer skills, and ensuring readiness for full-time employment after graduation. Through a variety of courses, we provide real-world experiences and equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in higher education and the workforce. All students participate in the Personal Finance course, guaranteeing them a solid foundation in managing their finances and making informed financial decisions. The department is committed to fostering student growth and supporting them in reaching their individual goals.
Curriculum and Courses:
ACCOUNTING I
This course covers systematic methods of keeping records, both in business and for personal use. The complete accounting cycle is studied for both a sole proprietorship service business and a partnership merchandising business. Students will create a semi-automated accounting workbook using Microsoft Excel to complete two comprehensive accounting simulations throughout the year. The course emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, cooperative, and student-centered learning. Guest speakers are invited to introduce students to various career opportunities in the accounting field. This course is suitable for college-bound students considering a business major or high school graduates looking to start their own business.
ACCOUNTING II
This college-level accounting course is recommended for students interested in a career in business or pursuing a post-secondary degree in business. It includes advanced methods of departmentalized accounting, internal control systems, general accounting adjustments, and managerial accounting. Guest speakers are invited to discuss career opportunities within the accounting field.
BUSINESS APPLICATIONS
This semester-long computer course improves students' digital literacy skills. Students use Microsoft Office Suite and Google applications to create real-world projects. Examples include creating business cards, flyers, using Google Forms for data collection, and developing financial calculators for analysis.
ENTREPRENEURSHIP
This course provides a foundation for students to develop the skills necessary to build a small business. Students will use and enhance innovative thinking, problem-solving, analytical, and managerial skills during this project-based learning course. Local small business owners are invited to share their business experiences. After studying a variety of case studies and scenarios, students collaborate to create a business plan that could become a reality for aspiring young entrepreneurs.
PERSONAL FINANCE
This course provides insight into the fundamentals of managing and investing money. Topics include employment and career development, banking, consumer credit, debt management, investments, budgeting, housing finances, taxes, and insurance. Projects simulating real market conditions are used to reinforce the curriculum and give students a better understanding of post-high school financial decisions.
