Morning Announcemen
June 9th

James Baldwin’s novels, short stories, essays, and poems intertwined themes of race, class, and sexuality. Active in the Civil Rights Movement, Baldwin was one of two people who was out as a gay person. Despite his active support for the movement, Baldwin was “uninvited” to speak at the March on Washington and excluded from Martin Luther King’s inner circle because of his sexuality. Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room, published in 1956, is a novel about an American man living in Paris and his relationships with other men, especially Giovanni, an Italian bartender.
